Thanks to Geoff Sulley From South Australia
For many years SA and Vic had held an annual tri sports carnival Bowls,
Cricket and Golf, rotating between the respective capital cities, This was
expanded to once every third year having a neutral venue, Commealla near
Mildura. There was always great camaraderie and a great time was always had
by all.
In about 1974 or 5 while hosting the carnival in Adelaide, a group were
sitting outside the clubhouse at Royal Adelaide under the verandah when the
discussion some how got onto why there is not an Australia wide golf comp
for firies, seeing we were having so much fun why not all of Australia.
Some of the people in the group were Alan Chance, Alan Sanders, Jeff Bray,
Ken Hoppa, Lyndsay Edis, Stan Gough, Meggsy Bollard, Jim Byrne, Geoff Sulley
and maybe a few others.
Some of the group were worried that an Australasian Comp would detract from
what we already had, a vibrant healthy competition, the others all thought it
was worth pursuing, Lindsay Edis, Alan Sanders and Ken Hoppa then went about
contacting other states, 2 years later the Australasian were up and running.
It was thought that SA should have the 2nd Australasian, but due to some
members of the Committee of the day against the idea, South Australia did
not hold one until the 4th year.
This was a watershed year, which in many peoples eyes saw the event become
bigger and better. It was decided by the SA organizing committee to hold the
event over a week, have woman's trips and a social non golf day for all to
really get together and socialize.
The week was an outstanding success and ever since has been held in this
format.
I might point out the annual game between SA and Vic is still as strong as
ever, most probably more so, with the event now held annually at Murray
Downs Golf & Country Club near Swan Hill.
